Figure 5. Test of new clones of poplar, imported as cuttings or seeds from Belgium (Geraardsbergen) or British Columbia (Vernon). The test is performed on a sandy soil in Vombsänkan in southern Sweden. For details, see Figure 1. The cultivation is drip irrigated with 20 mm per week during the growing season, minus rain, and fertilized with a total amount per year and ha of 80 kg nitrogen, pluss potassium and phosphorus, applied in recommended proportions and at two occasions. About 20 clones are tested in 3 replicates with 9 tree in each. The design is 3 x 2 m. Best clone so far is clone SRF 24 (see the chart above). Almost as good is clone SRF 90 and 47. Climatic conditions are shown in Figure 1. The clones are growing very differently, some have even died, why it is included a lot of edge effects in the production results. Multiply the results in kg/m2 with 30 and we obtained production in m3 per ha, multiplies it by 10 and production is obtained in tonnes of DM/ha, year.
